Making an Animated GIF the Old Fashioned Way

Ah animated GIFs, they never get old – well actually they do, but some of them are pretty cool. While they can be slapped together on a computer in a matter of minutes, animated GIFs are created using the same principals that were used to create early animations. The GIF player demonstrates this point by using a 19th century mechanical animation device, the phenakistoscope to create a brief animation by mounting a series of images on a wooden disk and spinning them in sequence.

While the maker, Pieterjan Grandry, didn’t post instructions for his build – it doesn’t look like it would be too hard to put together.
