I wish we had an “I can’t wait to get my sweaty hands on it” category to classify this one into. OUYA kickstarter company sees Nintendo’s upcoming WiiU, the Sony PS4 and the Microsoft XBOX 720, and raise them with a 99$ Android console.
The real kicker though, isn’t so much that the startup has gathered over 3 million dollars in pledges in just over three days, or that they offer a 10.000$ pledge with the following package attached to: “The Angel List. The entire first production run of consoles will have YOUR USERNAME and BACKER NUMBER ENGRAVED INTO IT (and of course you’ll get one). We’ll invite you and a friend to a private dinner before our launch party with our inner circle of game developers and designers. And, of course, we’ll love you forever.”
They’ve sold 15/20 10.000$ packages already which means there is definite interest, sadly it also means that at least 15 people have 10.000$ more than I do but I digress.
The real kicker is that they welcome hackers, and for a 700$ pledge they’ll give you a pre-rooted OUYA console but if you don’t have 700$ to spend on a console, they specify that rooting does not void the warranty. The also state that everything opens with standard screws and that hardware hackers can design their own peripherals.
Another plus for people like us, is that being Android based, we will probably be able to use it to watch videos and play music on our big screen, big sound systems. Now, when is this coming to Canada?
