If you are seriously into your making then you have probably thought, or at least fantasized, about getting a laser cutter at least once or twice. The problem is that they have always been expensive, prohibitively so – but prices are coming down and just like 3D printers, they are starting to get to a point where they are within reach.
It is capable of cutting through 1/4″ Plexiglass and wood, and can engrave a variety of materials. The work surface is 20″x12″, but it has a removable bed, so it is possible to work with larger surfaces, as long as you don’t mind repositioning the laser. For a better idea of what it can do, watch the video or check out the gallery below.
The fifth generation hobby laser from Full Spectrum Laser shows how far things have come. It is currently being funded on Kickstarter and has already pulled in nearly half of the $100,000 funding goal… and with 31 days to go, the smart money is on it getting there – but it is getting made regardless, as the team has turned to Kickstarter to boost their first round of production.
The asking price is still too high for most people, but it is well within reach of small businesses – and it might make a good group purchase as long as you have a bunch of friends (or fellow hobbyists) who know how to share.
Price: $3000 gets you one via Kickstarter; it will cost $3500 thereafter.
