When it comes to upgrading operating systems, my policy has always been to wait to see what goes wrong for other people before I take the plunge.

Snow Leopard’s issue is a bug that can cause user data to be wiped. It seems to occur when operating from guest accounts and then switching back. As I don’t use a guest account, I like my odds.

Yesterday, it arrived and short of time I decided to go ahead with the installation. While the smart move would have been to back everything up, I didn’t. I stuck the disk in the drive and hoped for the best. I was not disappointed.

All up, it took about an hour to get Snow Leopard running on my rapidly aging, pre-multitouch Mac Book Pro and I barely had to lift a finger.

What I got for my trouble was a massive performance improvement. Things have gone from a semi-acceptable level of sluggishness to lightning fast. While I might find myself crying later, if this data loss issue doesn’t get resolved, I am definitely impressed with the performance boost. It is like having a new computer.

Next up for the team is an attempt at getting XP to run, but they could just shoot for WinMo with an HTC-esque skin and have something that is both functional and awesome-looking.

Two players battle it out with swords, using four types of strikes and four types of blocks and sounds to let you know if you have made a successful cut or been blocked.

That would be pretty much all I need to hear to be sold if I had friends who owned iPhones, to date only one person in my office has one, so I will probably pass.

This stunning Australian cedar iPod mini case mod is the work of Australian designer Josh Darrah. Darrah completely gutted his Mini and reassembled it together with an iTripFM transmitter in the wooden case that he built by hand.
For more information and a gallery of Darrah’s masterpiece, check out We Interrupt.

I don’t get the need to put OSX on stuff that it is not meant to run on, I mean, nine times out of ten you are left with sub-par functionality. This example is case and point, the 3G modem, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, GPS don’t work, and you won’t be getting much other than the bare minimum of video, as there are no GMA500 chipset drivers. It turns a slick little net machine into little more than a word processor, but it is running off a USB drive, which makes switching back to “fully-functioning” Vista slickness a simple enough task.

But they do appear to have Bluetooth working, so there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. [Ubergizmo]
