The USB 4 Port Data Switch is probably the easiest way to “network” your devices. Plug your device and computers into the switch and you will be able to change which machine has access to it at the push of a button.
Note that if you go to the trouble of learning how to configure a home network then you will get the same functionality without switching, but this is cool for the countless people that don’t know what to do and don’t have the time to figure it out and its cheap..
Price: $29.99 [USB Switch via Red Ferret]

The Cool Shirt is a t-shirt with a clever water cooling system for your body. If you are familiar with water cooler designs for computers, then this one will look quite similar. There is an inlet and an outlet on the fifty feet of rubber hose that connect to a pump. The water circulates and you get to sit in the furious heat of summer without feeling the effects and without resorting to air conditioning.
It is designed for car use and is actually for racing car drivers, but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t rig one of these up for home use; all you need is to take your water container indoors and use a pump with a suitable power source. If you went so far as to cannibalize the cooling system from a water cooler (the drinking kind), you could keep yourself cool indefinitely, though with a slightly greater environmental footprint.
I have no idea of the price of the Cool Shirt, but considering that it is for a very limited market, I would say that it is likely to be expensive. If you have the time, inclination and are handy with a sewing machine, there is no reason why you could not construct your own. All it is, really, is a tight-fitting shirt with some rubber hose stitched to it attached to a water pump. You could work wonders with some aquarium parts. I must have a thing for tiny computers today, here is another one with more of a DIY flavor. Builder Mkmods has put together this Lego case from a range of multicolored bricks. As you can see from the picture, it has wheels, what you can’t see so easily is that it also has a remote control unit. It should be kept cool enough by the air intakes either side.
The Lego case does not have the most rocking specs, but it is not always about specs, the design is quirky and cool, I like it. The bricks are completely unglued, but according to Mkmods, “they hold together just fine.”
This is a cool Lego case, but I can think of one way that it could be made better. How about a sweet game mural? An 8-bit Commander Keen, Duke or Mario would give this interesting case the little something-something that it needs to be great. Conceptually it is great and has provided me with some food for thought for my next PC build.
In case you are wondering about components, it sports the following:
- VIA Epia PD Mobo 1Ghz
- Nvidia 6200 PCI Graphics
- Laptop 80 Gig 7200Rpm Hdd
- Laptop DVD
- 1 gig Geil DDR memory
- 200 watt PS

The USB business card is dumb. I use business cards. I have a friend who is an awesome graphic designer. She does me a good deal and I get to have the coolest looking business cards out of anyone that I know. I have had a few and have pretty much nailed the crucial information to have on them. Cell phone, not house phone, just in case. A URL and a couple of email addresses and my name in big bold letters to make me feel important. English on one side, Japanese on the other and no doodads to spoil the effect. The color scheme is a bold blue, white and gray. Why on earth would I want some USB enabled gimmick. I like the fact that my business card is a piece of high quality cardboard that does not cost very much but looks impressive.
I don’t need something that people can stick into their computers. Yeah, this could very well be the way of the future, but I am very happy with the present and not seeking to move out of my comfort zone. Thanks but no thanks M++Card, your idea sucks.

Tony Alleyne, the man who turned his apartment into the Star Trek Starship Voyager has gone bankrupt. He started transforming his apartment after his wife left him when he replaced the refrigerator with a ‘warp coil’. The apartment is located in Hinckley, Leics, has moulded walls, touch-panel blue lighting, and a command console. He even built a life-size model of the show’s transporter room with reshaped windows to look like portholes and set up vertical lights to give the illusion of being beamed up. Tony at one time had the apartment for auction on eBay for $2 million but had no luck in selling. Tony maxed out 14 credit cards accumulating £100,000 in debt. His goal was to lure other Trekkies to pay him to convert their humble abodes.
Here’s what Tony has to say on his grand plan:
But I was wrong and just overstretched. Building it in my apartment was the enjoyable and easy bit. But then I got hooked up with marketing and merchandise people here and in America and it all got out of hand.
I’m still proud of what I created but it’s been a financial disaster.

At least with all that credit card use, he probably earned a trip to space with all the accumulated airmiles.
