Rare Nintendo Championships Gold Unpwned by Fred Savage’s Little Brother

Rare Expensive Nintendo World Championships Gold Cartridge

Electronic sports as we know them really got a boost back in the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Nintendo World Championships were based on a monstrosity of a movie called The Wizard, which hopefully you either don’t remember or are too young to remember. The movie just seemed like one long commercial for the Power Glove which came out in the same year. Still, it was a golden time for Nintendo, way back before Sony had ever considered throwing their hat in the gaming console ring and PCs were still fetching as much as a good used car. It was the beginning of the gaming renaissance and the gold cartridges that were given to the winners quickly became hot property. One is selling on eBay for the starting price of $15,000:

For the competition, 116 special game cartridges were manufactured. 90 of these copies exist in a grey cartridge and were given out to semi-finalists of the 1990 NWC. 26 of these cartridges are gold – like the Legend of Zelda cartridge – and were given out to winners and runners-up in a contest held by Nintendo Power magazine.

To play the cartridge, one must have a controller inputed both controller ports and press start on the second player’s controller. For the competition, there was a special switch that would start all cartridges simultaneously.

Both versions of the cartridge feature DIP switches on the front, which can alter the time limit. Answers.com

Seller udisi is selling this special piece of gaming history over at the bay. He seems a trustworthy chap with a satisfaction rating of 100% and having been a member since 1998, that is no small feat. It will be interesting to see if one of the most coveted items of eight bit gaming memorabilia will actually change hands.

Faux Digital Message Tape Looks Interesting, Time Consuming

Faux Digital Message Tape

Normally faux anything rubs me the wrong way but this faux-digital message tape looks very interesting indeed. You write messages by blacking out white sections on the tape. It could take a while to put together a message of any length; but it does make a nice alternative to temporary signs. I don’t think this thing has any genuine home applications, but for mischief or business related activities, it truly rocks.

There are two styles to choose from, you can go with the groovy-segmented-retro-calculator style or boring old dot matrix. I know which one I would choose.

At $5-$9 a roll from Suck UK, you might not want to rewrite War and Peace.

Off the Beaten Track with the Garmin Rino 530 HCx

Garmin Rino 530 HCx

If you are heading into the wilderness, there is no need to leave technology behind. A GPS can be a very useful device to take along with you. In the old days, a portable GPS would set you back a pretty penny, but these days they are becoming very widespread. It is usually possible to find some bargains, but if you spend a little bit more money, you can get something like the Garmin Rino 530 HCx and it is a rocking portable unit.

The 530 HCx packs a lot of different technology into one little unit. The GPS information is displayed on a nice clear color display. While color is not strictly necessary, it does make it easier and faster to interpret information. Where the Garmin Rino 530 HCx departs from lesser models is with the extra features it packs in. It operates as a two-way radio with 14-mile range and manages to pack in an electronic compass, barometric altimeter that monitors weather trends and NOAA receiver. It has a micro-SD card slot, the micro-SD is, of course, not included. You do get one lithium-ion battery, which is good for about 14 hours of use, if you are going for an extended trip and are really getting off the beaten track, it is hardly enough. Sure, you can conserve power by switching it off when you do not need it, but you might want to look into some additional batteries and perhaps a solar charging station.

The Alter Ego Lamp

Alter Ego Lamp

Normal Lamps = boring
Alter Ego Lamps = uber coolness

Why satisfy yourself with normal lamps when you can be having fun with the Alter Egos?

One is suppose to resemble the “ugly” with its green color and no eyes, while the other is commonly known as the devil – red color with cute horns and tail.

Besides having the light on/off function, the two rounded lamps can also decorate your room, at least according to my peculiar taste I think they would look cool, don’t you?

Each light is made of plastic and comes with a roll switch and 7.5 watt bulb.

Price: $13 and up
