Whenever I see a weird or unusual chess set, the first thing I look for is how the pieces are differentiated. The Paul Fryer’s Vacuum Tube Chess set is a little bit special in this regard. The squares contain sockets for the vacuum tubes, which actually light up to display what piece they are. This is hands down the coolest chess set that I have ever seen.

If you want one, good luck, there were only seven made, vacuum tubes are expensive and something tells me that people that actually scored one of the seven are not going to let these masterpieces go any time soon. [Gizmodo via Slippery Brick]

The Super Mario Chess Collector’s Edition represents Nintendo’s first foray into the lucrative licensed chess set field. It includes the regulars from the game series, with no real surprises except that Luigi is the queen and Princesses Peach and Daisy are both bishops. (more…)

I am a sucker for a good chess set and there really are millions out there to choose form, but I kinda like this one. Let’s face it, chess is a pretty geeky game and to geekify it anymore is an achievement that requires recognition.

I have just come to realize that my coffee table sucks, well no it doesn’t, not exactly, but this one is much better. The table is based on Bodium Castle in East Sussex, and comes as a three dimensional puzzle that you will have to build yourself. Combining Lego with chess is almost too much awesomeness for regular folks to handle. This is one of the coolest models that Lego has put together in a long time. According to the Lego website:
