When you think about it, a toilet cistern is the perfect environment for a fish. You just need to make it clear so that some light can get in and figure out a way that you don’t flush the fish away while they are alive. The Fish ‘n Flush is an option that works, but you do have to question the ethics of hiding your fish away in the stankiest room of the house.
Rebreathers have been steadily making their way into the sport diving market for a number of years now, so this is really nothing new. Rebreathers work very differently from bottled gas systems in that they scrub the CO2 out of the air that you exhale and recycle it. It means that you can potentially stay underwater for longer, but perhaps the biggest benefit is containing your air.
By containing your air you eliminate bubbles which can be distracting, disorienting and can disturb fish. You cannot really put a minute value on how long someone can stay underwater, every person is different. Things like muscle mass, body size and breathing rate come into play. Rebreathers will keep you down for long enough. Poseidon claims that you will be able to stay underwater for twice as long as dive tables allow.
Word on the street is that the Poseidon Discovery Mk VI is selling for about $7400, not to bad considering what you get for your money. You also have to factor in the training costs, but they are worth it if diving is your thing.
Every once in a while a story comes along that makes you take a second look. This is one of them. Rory Stokes, a 15-year-old schoolboy of the Australian Science and Mathematics School in Adelaide has disproven a commonly held belief that the memory span of a goldfish is only three seconds. He did so out of a desire to prove to people that keeping fish in tiny tanks is cruel.
According to Rory:
We are told that a goldfish has a memory span of less than three seconds and that no matter how small its tank is, it will always discover new places and objects. I wanted to challenge this theory as I believe it is a myth intended to make us feel less guilty about keeping fish in small tanks.
Over a three week period, Rory trained his goldfish to swim to a beacon in order to obtain food. Over the three week period, the time taken by the fish to reach the beacon reduced from over a minute to less than five seconds.
Cool, so you can train fish, how does Rory go about proving that the fish have longer memory spans?
This is where the experiment gets interesting. After the three week training period, Rory removed the beacon for six days. After six days, the beacon was replaced in the water and the fish reached it in a total of 4.4 seconds. “My results strongly showed that goldfish can retain knowledge for at least six days. They can retain that knowledge indefinitely if they use it regularly,” said Rory.
Toilet tanks were boring and soulless until Vital Industries decided to do something about it. If you are not content with the safe color choices brought to you by your manufacturer of choice, why not add a toilet sticker? There are a few of them to choose from. They have SCUBA divers, motor scooters, bicycles, puffer fish and cowboys. From what I understand, they are easy to apply and removable (though you will need some cleaning product and a razor blade to do the cleanup properly).
