The picture that you see above you is the very first working steampunk cellphone to be reported. As you can see from the picture, there is a nice mix of polished wood and shiny brass and a couple of gauges that may or may not serve any non-aesthetic function. This is no dressed up cellphone, it doesn’t open up to reveal a hidden screen or keypad; it does not have either of these conveniences. If you want to call someone, you do it via a binary-coded punch card; it doesn’t get more steampunk than that. (more…)

Initial Reflections on Firefox 3.0

Like over 8 million other people I downloaded Firefox 3.0 in the hours after its official release. I did have a play with some of the earlier Beta versions, but left the release candidates alone as I simply didn’t have time. I must say, it was worth the wait and despite the apparent security hole, it has made for some pretty good browsing. (more…)

Meet Jonathan Oxer, Australia’s Geek King
Jonathan Oxer is well and truly the king of Australian geeks and not just because he is an ex-president of Linux Australia. There is more to Oxer’s geek status than the love of the penguin. The RFID chip that was surgically implanted in his arm to allow him to open his house without a key has something to do with it. Then there is the magnetic switch inside the letter box that notifies him via computer, email or SMS when a letter has been inserted. Garden irrigation, wired, curtains, doors, lights and windows, wired; he can turn any of the lights in his house off using a cell phone or a telephone keypad. Despite the level of technology in his house, Jonathan lives for “having everything work invisibly”, and conceals all of the wiring out of sight.
There is no ding-dong of the doorbell at Jonathan Oxer’s house. You press the button, and video is streamed to the TVs in his house. If he’s not home, a picture is sent to his phone. Even the bathroom is wired, by issuing the command, “shower”; the lights will be turned on, windows closed and water temperature set to a perfect 41C.
In case you are wondering, Mr. Oxer is married (with two children) and his wife not only endures his tech obsession, she supports it. The cost of wiring just about every aspect of his house came to a “couple of thousand dollars,” thanks to his passion for DIY. One can only guess how many hours have gone into the project, but building it is half of the fun, isn’t it. Jonathan Oxer, king of the geeks, I salute you.

Music Image Sofa System
With the Super Bowl just hours away, everyone is trying to find the best seat in the house. If your looking for the best place to your butt down to watch the game, I would recommend you find someone who has the Music Image Sofa System. This sofa easily wins the title of
ultimate couch and has been out for a couple of years. Designed by noted designer,Philippe Starck, the sofa besides being slick looking, also houses an audio video system. The sofa contains two speakers, a sub-woofer, and a “technological totem, the unit that houses the AV equipment”. The sofa has a hidden compartment behind the back of the sofa which can accommodate a video projector.
