Variety may be the spice of life, but when it comes to memory cards for phones, cameras and other gadgets it is frustrating. Fortunately, collaboration from a number of manufacturers may spell the end to our memory card blues. The new Universal Flash Storage solution should be available as early as 2009. It should be significantly faster than existing speeds as well. Micron Technology Inc., Spansion LLC, STMicroelectronics NV and Texas Instruments Inc. are also collaborating with the project.

It is nice to see a manufacturer supporting something other than i-Hysteria. The iPhone looks good, but variety is the spice of life. The Nokia 5310 is a music playing phone due out in the United States in the fourth quarter of this year. JBL are gearing up for it and created a docking station specifically for it. It doubles as a phone charger and will give you six hours of listening pleasure from four AA batteries. A computer controlled equalizer will let you change your sound levels. If you do not plan on getting a Nokia 5310, the JBL On Call 5310 will work with almost any device with a 3.5mm mini-jack.

A Nokia 6630 has been used by Italian author Roberto Bernocco to write a 384 page science fiction novel as he commuted to work each day. Using the Nokia 6630’s T9 predictive typing system, Bernocco was able to type out his novel in around 17 weeks. He divided it into paragraphs and downloaded which he then downloaded onto his computer.
The book’s title is Compagni di Viaggo, which translates to “Fellow Travelers.” Lulu is a website that allows authors to publish their own work. While Compagni di Viaggo is not exactly raking in the sales just yet, it is interesting to note that Bernocco tapped out his novel in perfect Italian.
The novel is available for the very reasonable price of $17.38, or as an e-book for $2.47.

The scroll cellphone is exactly what it suggests, a cellphone shaped as a Chinese scroll. But don’t be so excited about it, for now it is only a concept.
It was designed by Yun Lang and has some obvious details that can be seen on the image:
- the numeric keyboard is wisely placed on the scroll
- it makes use of a flexible display, similar to the Nokia 888
- you don’t need to unroll the scroll to make a call
Yun Liang”s scroll cellphone takes its inspiration from how traditional Chinese paintings are unfurled.
