R2-D2 Game Packs In Eight Consoles, Eschews The New

R2-D2-8-game-console-mod-thumb-550x672-24567
This R2-D2 packs in eight different consoles and a projector, to create a one-of-a-kind, all-in-one monstrosity of the very best kind.

Featured consoles: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Genesis, Dreamcast, Playstation, Xbox and a PS2.

Conspicuous by their absences are the PS3, X-360 and Wii, but given the case, it seems appropriate to keep things old-school. [TheForce via DVICE]

DIY Backyard Theater Doesn’t Break The Bank

diy_backyard_theater
Here in Japan, backyards are for rich folks and farmers only, but if I had one, setting up a backyard theater would be high on my list of priorities. It can get expensive, but building your own is a great way to keep the costs down.

Geekdad pulled off a respectable job for $247.75, and that included a professionally installed awning, which he used to beat a self-imposed deadline, so it could possibly be put together for $50-100 less (as long as you have a projector handy).

DIY HD Projector, An Extremely Worthy Project

_hd_projector
Here is something that looks like a very cool, yet not excessively complicated DIY project, a high definition projector. While I am not sure how much it would cost to get the kit to the States (it comes from Germany), chances are that people would still save a significant amount of money, if they are prepared to take the risk and invest the time. Plus, you get that awesome sense of satisfaction that only comes with building something yourself. (more…)

Flamingo Rising: The World’s Smallest Community Drive-In

outdoor-1
Uberreview reader Mickey sent me these pictures of his truly awesome outdoor movie theater, Flamingo Rising. Considering that Mickey screens movies almost every weekend at Lake Diversion – for free – it would seem a great time to spread the word. The theater is a simple setup, that consists of a handmade screen, Tiger DVD projector and two directional sound speakers (but drive-in speakers are on the way).

While it has been dubbed “The Smallest Drive-In Theater in the World,” there are no cars involved, instead people sit on vintage lawn chairs.

In Mickey’s own words:

I must make it clear that this is a Community Theater and I in NO WAY make any money from it. We show Movies at Lake Diversion, Texas almost every weekend in the summer its almost always packed and everyone is welcome!

If you live in or around Lake Diversion in Texas and you want to meet a few people and enjoy the fruits of Mickey’s labor, leave a comment and we will put you in touch. What can I say, I am a sucker for a good bit of community spirit. –Thanks Mickey

Drawing On Powerpoint Presentations Will Make Presentations More Fun, Sadly Won’t Make Presenting Any Less of a Chore

afterglow
If you have ever wanted to write all over someone’s Powerpoint presentation while they are giving it, there is now an expensive opportunity to do so. A system called Afterglow allows users, by way of some clever camera-based tracking, to literally write on a projector screen using a laser pointer. The idea is awesome, but it will unfortunately be a big corporation toy for a while at least, as it is prohibitively expensive.

Give it a couple of years and that might change. I long for the day that a quick bit of laser ninjary can have me writing “this presentation bites” at a staff meeting, but that day may be a long time coming.

Price: $1980 [Afterglow via The Gadgeteer, Oh Gizmo]
