Solar Umbrella Globe Lights, May or May Not Attract Creepy Crawlies

Solar Umbrella
If you want to light your patio at night and you want to do so in a green way, then you might consider the Solar Umbrella Globe Lights. As the name implies, there are solar panels in the top of an umbrella that will soak up enough juice during the day to keep your lights going for up to six hours. That is pretty good.

The drawback is of course that this thing is bound to bring bugs. I figure that it is a given that lights outside attract all kinds of flying insects, so you might want to see if you can purchase a solar-powered bug zapper to go along with it.

Dutch Build the First Solar-Powered Speedboat

Czeers MK1

It is not too often that we associate solar powered with anything fast and or furious, but perhaps it is time that we start. The Czeers MK1 is a 10-meter vessel covered in photovoltaic cells that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 30 knots (55.5 km/ph to you non-nautical folks out there). While there are certainly faster boats on the water, those tend to use obscene amounts of fuel.

Solar Electric Powered Car Kit a Two Weekend Job

SUNN Neighborhood Electric Vehicle
If you have a bit of time off coming up and are looking for a worthy project, how about building your own solar powered car? The SUNN Solar Electric Car Kit can be pieced together over the space of about 4 or 5 days. The kit will give you everything that you need except the batteries and solar panels which can be locally sourced to save you a bundle on shipping. Solar panels and batteries are heavy and thus expensive to ship.

The top speed of the SUNN is a very sober 25mph, which is fast enough in some locales. If you are using it sans solar panels and just charging it from an outlet, you should be able to manage 20 miles. That range is extended quite significantly if you go solar. A panel on the hood will give you an additional 3 miles on a sunny day and one on the roof will give you 14 miles. Add that all together and you have a 37-mile range which should get most people to and from work.

Solar Unagi Has a Limited Market

Sola Unagi

I don’t know of too many people that would desire to own a 10kg solar charger. Seriously, this thing is a monster. It is also something that I would be afraid to take through airport security as I am sure that they would feel certain that it is a “device”. There is no Lithium in this bad boy, it is lead acid all the way. With two 13W solar arrays, I am guessing that it would take a while to charge the Solar Unagi.

Where is the appeal? I think that the Solar Unagi does have some limited appeal, but I am not sure if it will reach the people that would put it to its best use. It gives a pretty neat alternative to running everything off a car battery if you are out in the middle of nowhere. How about people that work in countries where the electricity is not dependable or people that are working in disaster zones? The Solar Unagi is far too expensive and overpowered for the casual user. If you are going to carry a clunky solar charger around, why not make it something like this that can actually do some charging. Sure 10kg will give most people a hernia, but this will power a mobile office with juice to spare.

Price: Approximately $1365 from Strapya.
