First of all, I have the utmost respect for Jake Von Slatt and this is not a competition, but you do have to admit that the German maker of this steampunk keyboard (who was inspired by the original) has an interesting take on the genre; it looks absolutely superb - you have to love the way that it sits up nice and high like a typewriter. It is a definite contender.

You pretty much have to love all of the crazy creations that Datamancer comes up with, but this is the first one that looks comfortable enough to use for extended periods of time. There is plenty of brass, just enough wood and of course the classic typewriter keys, this is without a doubt the best steampunk keyboard I have seen in a long, long time.

The Mechanical Aural Communication Device looks like an awesome piece of steampunk art, that’s because it is. Unfortunately, it isn’t a dressed up Bluetooth earpiece, it is just a prop, but doesn’t it look awesome? [Flickr via Watchismo]

I had never thought about concrete as a material for countertops, but when you really think about it, it makes sense. Concrete is a very versatile material; it can be shaped pretty much any way that you want and stained or colored to create awesome effects. The texture can also be varied according to your needs: it can be extremely smooth or very rough. It is durable and reasonably inexpensive as a building material (when compared to the price of other countertop materials). The picture above speaks for itself in terms of what can be accomplished with it.

I happen to like the whole Steampunk aesthetic, but you aren’t going to find me in a workshop getting my hands dirty or spending time that I don’t have trying to build a Von Slatt-esque masterpiece. I don’t have the skills and that is all there is to it. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive way to turn your 15.4″ Mac Book Pro into a steam-powered calculation engine that doesn’t involve brass, copper, or any tools; as long as you can peel and stick, the Underworld Gelaskin should do the job.
Sure, it won’t be unique or valuable, but it will look pretty cool and it will protect your laptop in the process.
Price: $29.95 [Gelaskins via Ubergizmo, Like Cool]
