Psst, Anyone Wanna Buy an Ax? Gladiator Ax Hits the Block

Psst, want to buy my ax?
The gentleman in the picture above is holding an ax from the movie Gladiator. Old Rusty Crowe did not get his sweaty paws on it, but it already has one attractive bid and you can bet that it is going to get more. While Gladiator is not exactly typical geek motion picture fodder, it certainly has its geek following. I put that down to Dungeons and Dragons fanatics with a fetish for knives and stabbing weapons. eBay seller Delacuse with a 99.5% positive feedback rating has the ax in question which is currently at $1,600 but I am sure that we can expect to see it go much, much higher. According to the description:

A superior prop weapon created by the #1 film armourer in the world for GLADIATOR. This massive, hand crafted, one-of-a-kind axe is made from wood and metal with hand hammered copper and leather adornments. The shaft is hand planed. This is exactly the same axe that the armourer holds and talks about on the DVD (see that all the marks line up). Rubber moulded stunt weapons were made from this hero weapon.

This is a truly sweet looking movie prop and I could see it going very well in some sort of insanely overpriced Gladiator themed home theater. It is not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. If anyone has the time or inclination to follow this, you can drop price updates with time remaining in the comments.

Price: $1600 with 7 days and 11 hours to go.

Star Wars Death Star Home Theater

deathstartheater_5907.jpg

Producing a home theater you would only expect to see at a Star Wars fanboy convention, Vic Wertz and Lisa Stevens made this Death Star Home Theater System, that not only looks awesome, but produces spectacular sound as well. “That room looks really cool, but what”s amazing about it is that it sounds really good,” Ward says. “A lot of these concept rooms… they just don”t sound very good.”

To create an accurate depiction, Wertz and Stevens called on none other than Doug Chiang, the lead designer on the set of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. After three different Star Wars themed designs, they decided to settle on a home theater that looks like a spot on the deck of the Death Star. The room includes a life-sized Han Solo, C3po, and Boba Fett models.

Top 10 Toys for Geeks who have Everything (Part One)

10 Geek Toys

This is part one, toys one through five, for geeks who have everything. I have scoured the reaches of the Internet and come up with ten absolutely awesome geek toys. To make this list, they had to be one of a kind or extremely rare, insanely expensive and at least a little bit geeky. Most of the stuff comes from the films and TV shows that made us what we are today. Most of this stuff is advertised around the web, but almost always ends up on eBay. They are in no particular order. A lot of the stuff in this guide came from ProfilesInHistory as they geared up toward an enormous set of auctions in their “Hollywood Auction 28″. If you catch the prices that they sold for, include them in a comment and we will add them to the post.

300: Spartan Shield

300: Spartan Shield
This is a screen used Spartan shield directly from the set of 300 in Montreal. It is the only one of its kind on the market to my knowledge. It was apparently used earlier on in the film and appears to be weathered and battle damaged. It is constructed from fiberglass.

Price: $10,000 from StarWarsProps

Terminator 2: Judgment Day – Hunter Killer Tank

Terminator 2: Tank

This bad boy meets all of our requirements. It is believed to be a one of a kind. It was most likely used as a maquette before two full-sized models were built. It is small, just 10 inches tall x 13 inches wide and 15 inches long. It comes, of course, with a letter of authenticity. Three of the wheels are detached and require some repair. This fully detailed miniature does not come cheap.
Price: $5,000 – $7,000 from ProfilesInHistory (Item #868)

Hurt your Bankroll with the Pioneer VSA-LX70

VSA-LX70

Pioneer has just released a high-end audio product that can perhaps go with their latest ultra-expensive plasma TV offerings. The Pioneer VSA-LX70 is a 380-Watt amplifier that is designed to match the latest Pioneer high-end video product range. It is the perfect companion to their new ultra-expensive plasma TVs or their new Blu-ray disk player.

There is no mistaking the VSA-LX70 for a low-end product. It has an attractive piano-black finish, impressive lines and a bright screen that is not overstated or gaudy. It is large and heavy without seeming unwieldy. It looks classy and it more than equals its looks with performance. Pioneer do not bother plastering it with different logos, but it has numerous certifications. It is, of course THX Select 2 and DTS-HD certified. Looking at the back, you quickly become aware of the amount of ports. There are a lot of them. The price is high, yet within the budget of many serious, if not excessively wealthy, home theater buffs. (more…)
