Top 13 Coolest Toys On The Planet

For the 3rd year in a row, we bring you the coolest collection of toys on the planet. As we do ever year we add one more number to the list from the year previously which takes us to lucky number 13.

Without further ado, here is the 2008 collection of the coolest toys around. From hand crank locomotives to a dinosaur that gives bouncy rides, these toys are perfect for kids of all ages. Enjoy.

The Hand Crank Locomotives

The Hand Crank Locomotives

The hand crank trains makes me wish I was a kid again, or at least a kid with rich parents.

This is the heirloom locomotive reminiscent of the ones encountered at carnivals and fairs in the 1940s that uses the simple pushing and pulling of a child’s arms on a hand-crank to propel it around an outdoor track. Each of the two included locomotives is made from cast aluminum with stainless-steel crank handles, and supports a single child up to 100 lbs. Minimal effort is required of children as they crank, so each train glides easily on precision-crafted, cast-iron wheels with a familiar “click-clack” sound with no slipping. The 30′ diam. 12-gauge circular track is made of welded steel, and sets up in under one hour with the included fasteners and wrenches;  Includes two locomotives and track. Includes two nylon covers to protect locomotives. Ages 3-13.

Snowball Blaster

Firing your Snowball Blaster is a simple process, pack the snow into the forming chambers, pull back the slingshot firing mechanism and let rip on targets up to 50 feet away. There are three forming chambers, which make three snowballs that are said to be perfectly spherical. You will always win the snowball fight as long as the snowball blaster is around.

EyeClops Night Vision Goggles

If your looking for a great excuse to buy the night vision goggles, ThinkGeek has you covered:

Here’s the situation: you wake up in the middle of the night and you have to pee. Real bad. But you don’t want to turn on all the lights, for they will burn your eyes with their incandescence. So, you either injure yourself, stumbling in the darkness, or you wet your bed. Neither is fun. If you have some of these awesome Night Vision Goggles next to your bed, you’ll be able to see in the dark and pee in safety and ease.

Ok, so you might think these things are just toys, the type that say “night vision” but really just have a pop out flashlight. Nope. These are the real deal; true infrared night vision, for the price of a toy. You can’t imagine the happy dance we did when we realized these worked really well. Now we can sneak around like the ninjas we know we are, in the dark, watching all - and you won’t be able to see us. Unless you’re a ninja too, and have some EyeClops Night Vision Goggles of your own.

Hosting Company Closure Sees Spam Almost Stop

Spam volume has significantly declined since hosting company McColo went down on Tuesday night. The site went down after four months of investigation by security experts and an investigative piece by Washington Post reporter Brian Krebs, which claimed that 75% of all spam was being sent via the hosting service.

From CNET:

Jose Nazario of Arbor Networks, a company that monitors botnet activity, speculated that McColo vanished at around 9 a.m. Eastern time on November 10. Botnets are frequently used to relay spam, and McColo may have hosted some of the command and control servers necessary to coordinate spam campaigns.

I didn’t really believe it myself until I checked my spam box today. I had 12 in there for Tuesday, 8 for Wednesday and none as of 3:08 p.m. today. That strikes me as a victory in my book, but it will no doubt be short-lived. [Washington Post, CNET] Image [Message Labs]

Sony Getting Tight on Their DRM, One Download Only

If you download movies from Sony via the PlayStation video store, then you might be interested to learn a little more about their draconian DRM policy. Sony will give you only a single download of a video and a courtesy download if you request one but after that you are on your own. So think carefully about what you download for those tiny little hard drives, because once you delete it, its gone. [Ars Technica via Kotaku]

Gold Bang & Olufsen Beo 4 Remote, I am Only Mostly Against It

I hate bling and golden gadgets will never find their way into my home, however, this gold Bang & Olufsen Beo 4 remote is pretty low on the bling spectrum and I can see why some people might want it. Goldstriker is hoping to sell 200 of them.

By now, all of you are probably well aware of my views on “bling”. It is wasteful and unnecessary and does not enhance the functionality of the device. This remote control, however, doesn’t come with such a high price tag. As far as blinged gadgets go, it is relatively affordable and if you do feel the need to coat your electronics in precious metals, you could do worse.

Price: About $1000 [Goldstriker via Born Rich]

Strike Two, Jeffrey Robert Weinberg Gets Two Years for Cyber Stalking

I could offer some inane advice as to how a geek can survive in a state penitentiary, but Jeffrey Robert Weinberg probably knows better than me. At the ripe old age of 23, he is already done 10 months in a federal penitentiary.

It would seem that he did not learn to straighten up and fly right after a ten month sentence for hacking a Lexis-Nexus owned database. His latest crime is cyber stalking an Internet celebrity of whom I have never heard. (more…)
