Twelve Buildable DIY Projects That Don’t Suck

dremel500
If you haven’t done an awesome DIY project since you can remember then today is your lucky day, we have twelve ideas lined up here that given enough time and energy, pretty much anyone can put together. Don’t get me wrong, there are some tough projects here, but stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to acquire new skills, and once you’ve got them (as long as you maintain them), they are with you for life.

To make life easier, we have included a difficulty scale: 1- a very simple project with almost no skill required, it is just a matter of screwing a few parts together; 2 – a simple project with some specialized knowledge or skills required; 3 – a moderately difficult project that may need several skills and/or basic soldering to complete; 4 – a difficult project that requires a range of skills and may demand some intricate soldering; 5 – an extremely difficult project that requires detailed knowledge and a range of skills.

Note: even the most difficult projects that we have selected are buildable, but will likely require a good deal of research. These projects are difficult, not necessarily due to the building involved, but because there is likely to be a certain amount of improvisation necessary to get the job done. For this reason, people are going to have to know or be prepared to learn the why not just the how of the design process. As long as it doesn’t involve doing anything particularly dangerous, we thoroughly recommend biting off more than you can chew. It is the best way to learn!

Soundcast Outcast Review – The Ultimate Outdoor Wireless Speaker

The Outcast speaker system from Soundcast is simply amazing. It wins two honors, the best wireless speaker I have ever heard. Period. Secondly, the largest battery pack I have ever set my eyes on . It wouldn’t surprise me if the engineering and design team behind this product had military experience because this thing is built like a tank. When the product is described as “All-weather, outdoor speaker system”, they are not lying. I honestly could see this speaker surviving a hurricane or 2. It looks and feels that it was designed to last. The company produced videos featured below that show the speaker working while set on fire and going through a car wash and just like the energizer bunny, the Outcast keeps going and going.

Tipping the scales at 40 pounds this “portable speaker system” will impress any audiophile. The Outcast sound system is really easy to use, just plug in the iCast transmitter that comes with the unit, connect your favorite music source, power up and your party will begin. When the iCast is connected to the iPod you can control volume, skip forward or back, pause and play the iPod from the top of the speaker system itself. The company claims it can transmit signals via the 2.4GHz spectrum up to 350 feet outdoors or 150 feet indoors. I took the unit 2 houses over and it did continue to play sweet music with no issue. It also has a rechargeable battery that lasts 10 hrs per charge.

At three inches shy of 3 ft and a 40lb weight problem, calling it portable is pushing the envelope. It looks like an air purifier on steroids or a tiny little robot. Some might find the system big and bulky, but I assure you, once you hear it blasting your favorite tunes you will overlook the size.

Sound quality:
Simply amazing. I know I already used those words to describe it before but it truly is. I played a range of music through various audio sources and the speakers delivered high end quality sound. The outcast has one 8” downward firing woofer, four 3” high frequency drivers in an omni-directional array all being powered by a 100 watt digital amplifier. Everyone I played the system was blown away how crystal clear this wireless speaker is. I CRANKED IT, and there was no distortion.

Who would benefit from the Outcast:

This system is perfect for people who spend a large portion of their time outdoors and love music. If you have a cottage, frequent outdoor parties (remember to invite your neighbors) or even a boat, this outdoor wireless speaker system is great for you.

Sony Unveils Sub-1mm Thin OLED TV at CEATEC

Sony have a new prototype OLED screen that they are showing off. At a thickness of 0.9mm (the TV not the screen), Sony’s prototype is mind bendingly thin, the product of carefully grinding down the glass substrate of the screen. Unfortunately this process also makes the screen extremely brittle, which means this is something that you wouldn’t want to have if you are clumsy or have kids of any age.

The screen itself appears to be the same 0.3mm screen that has been around for some time now. The prototype’s showing at CEATEC also fuels speculation that we may soon see an updated and even thinner XEL-1. [PC World Image]

Apple’s “Brick” a Home Theater PC For the Masses

There has been a bit of talk on potential new Apple “Brick”. More than one blogger suggesting that Apple might be planning a new low-cost desktop; something that would knock some of the stuffing out of the low-cost Hackintosh products that have been hitting the market. I disagree with this theory, and am thinking more along the lines of the Gigaom projection, for the simple reason that there is already a Mac Mini – there is no place for a lighter Mac desktop; and any performance boost that they could give the Mac Mini wouldn’t really constitute a new product. I think Apple’s new product will be an affordable, mid-spec home theater PC (HTPC) for masses, that will replace the lackluster Apple TV.
