Twelve Acceptable Father’s Day Gifts For Geek Dads

fathers
It’s Father’s Day again and you are here because you have no idea what to get your old man (or the father of your children) for this special day that comes only once a year. The problem is further compounded if your old man happens to be a geek and who as a result probably does not care for sports memorabilia of any description.

You have been debating getting him yet another tie, but you suspect that he just won’t like it. Your suspicions are correct, he will hate it because most ties suck and will just remind him of the corporate grind that he is forced to suffer through five days a week or more.

Fortunately, your quest for a better Father’s Day gift has led you here. Our list of acceptable gifts has been compiled by two fathers, both of whom concur that any item on the list would make either of their days.

Thanko Spy Camera Watch Will Probably Be Put to Nefarious Use

If it is from Thanko then it is going to be weird, interesting or really, really trashy. The spy camera watch is a combination of all three, it is a fairly plain business-style watch with a pinhole-sized lens on the face between 1 o’clock and 2′oclock.

There is 4GB of onboard storage capacity which is enough for two hours of AVI at 352 x 288 resolution. Video can be retrieved via USB.

Price: Around $150 [Thanko via Gearlog]

Epson Workforce 600 Review

Epson Workforce 600
The first thing you notice when you open the box is that the Epson Workforce 600 is a nice looking machine. The sleek looking printer will fit in with the decor of most offices or it might even improve the decor of your office space. The Epson Workforce 600 is a feature rich printer at a very affordable price ($199). It can Print / Copy / Scan / Photo / Fax plus it has WiFi . Consumers will find that the user interface on the Epson Workforce 600 is very user friendly thanks to the 2.5″ color LCD screen that tilts for easy viewing. I tested the printer on a Mac and on a Windows XP system and the workforce 600 came out shining like a star.

USB Business Card… Nah I don’t Think So!

USB Business Card

The USB business card is dumb. I use business cards. I have a friend who is an awesome graphic designer. She does me a good deal and I get to have the coolest looking business cards out of anyone that I know. I have had a few and have pretty much nailed the crucial information to have on them. Cell phone, not house phone, just in case. A URL and a couple of email addresses and my name in big bold letters to make me feel important. English on one side, Japanese on the other and no doodads to spoil the effect. The color scheme is a bold blue, white and gray. Why on earth would I want some USB enabled gimmick. I like the fact that my business card is a piece of high quality cardboard that does not cost very much but looks impressive.

I don’t need something that people can stick into their computers. Yeah, this could very well be the way of the future, but I am very happy with the present and not seeking to move out of my comfort zone. Thanks but no thanks M++Card, your idea sucks.

Stoetling Polygraph Under the Hammer

PolygraphYou might have to read a few manuals to learn how to use a Stoetling Polygraph. We are not looking at a cheap, novelty lie detector. This is a scientific instrument, a polygraph and when used correctly, it will indicate when a person is being less than truthful. Retail price for a new polygraph is typically around $2,000+, and they can be hard to find.

There are all sorts of cool applications for these things, if you are planning to learn how to beat the polygraph, just remember the great words of wisdom from George Costanza. “It’s not a lie if you believe it.” There many kinds of home use applications that one can imagine for your own lie detector. By far the coolest scenario would be something like that scene in the “Seinfeld” episode, “The Beard.”
