If you have a monstrous collection of VHS tapes that you would like to digitize before disposal, the Ion VCR 2 PC is one way of accomplishing the task. Basically, the VCR2PC is a video player with a USB out. You plug it into your computer and hit play and wait, wait and then wait some more for the video to finish playing. Isn’t it so much easier with digital media? While I phased out VHS from my collection long ago, there are plenty of people that can’t stand the thought of parting with all of their monstrous collections of tapes, something like this ought to help them make the job easier (though if you have 20,000 of them you might want to call some minions into action).
Price: $250

Almost no one uses video tapes anymore and they are increasingly hard to find, but if you have an old collection lying around, it can be put to good use. Hacked Gadgets has a great little project which turns an old VHS tape (I suppose it would work for Beta too if anyone still has those or knows what they are). They fitted the inner workings of a powered USB hub, a couple of LEDs and presto USB hub in a video tape.
There is a little bit of wiring involved, but this is something simple enough for a novice with a soldering iron to accomplish. Note that it would not hurt to have a few extra types on hand in case of mistakes. I have to admit I love the Hacked Gadgets idea of adding a motor and a little tape to it to have the spools turning when it is powered on. [Instructables via Hacked Gadgets]

Pioneer has just released a high-end audio product that can perhaps go with their latest ultra-expensive plasma TV offerings. The Pioneer VSA-LX70 is a 380-Watt amplifier that is designed to match the latest Pioneer high-end video product range. It is the perfect companion to their new ultra-expensive plasma TVs or their new Blu-ray disk player.
There is no mistaking the VSA-LX70 for a low-end product. It has an attractive piano-black finish, impressive lines and a bright screen that is not overstated or gaudy. It is large and heavy without seeming unwieldy. It looks classy and it more than equals its looks with performance. Pioneer do not bother plastering it with different logos, but it has numerous certifications. It is, of course THX Select 2 and DTS-HD certified. Looking at the back, you quickly become aware of the amount of ports. There are a lot of them. The price is high, yet within the budget of many serious, if not excessively wealthy, home theater buffs. (more…)

The Ion Audio Tape2PC is a USB gadget for anyone who still has cassettes. It will allow you to rip your cassette collection into MP3 and even put it straight into iTunes. Sure, your microphone port can function as an analog in, but many people do not own a cassette player anymore. If your cassette collection is in reasonable condition and you want to preserve it digitally, then this could just be the thing for you. The price is a little on the expensive side, but Costco will carry it, so it will probably go down in price when the novelty wears off.
